HELP! I'm killing my husband!

This is mainly for Denise, only because she is a vegetarian, but I would LOVE anyone's input! My husband has a bad case of gout in his foot (I know, I thought that was an old fashion disease, too) and I've been doing alot of research and found that it is caused mainly by eating too much red meat and fatty foods (hummmm...). Any kind of fresh fruit, white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, dairy, and broccoli and cabbage are good for his symptoms. Anyway, I take partial responsibility for his pain because I do all the cooking around here so if anyone has any gout-friendly recipes, I would love to have some ideas! Thanks!

I like to use ground turkey instead of hamburger in any traditional recipes such as spaghetti, lasagna, hamburgers, meatballs etc. Just add spices while cooking it. Hormel makes a Vegetarian chili that tastes like normal chili. I like to put that over scones to make navajo tacos. Top with all your fav taco toppings. I would think your hubbie will start missing meat so make things like vegetable hamburgers, hot dogs or chicken. They really have updated the products and they do taste like meat. I can not stand the taste of meat and I hate them! Stick to your regulars just changed a bit and I would think everyone will be happy. Good luck to you and your husband. Hope this helps.

I love what Denise said. I was actually thinking about eating healthier as I tanked on fudge, Dutch apple pie (everyone still has to try to make it--it's amazing), and more chocolate. So, it's not necessarily helping Brent eat healthier, it's more what I want to do.

One strategy is to not buy unhealthy food. After a meal, I always want chocolate. When I was a kid, we'd have an orange for dessert. I loved it. And, I think I'll have veggies cut up and ready in the fridge that I can just pull out. And yes, I'll eat it with dip because that's okay with me.

Also, the options I give my family at meals are water and milk. I don't believe in juice (only orange juice), kool-aid, or soda.

I've noticed that when my kids are ready to eat dinner and it's not quite ready yet, that they'll actually eat their salad if it's the only thing on their plate, while they wait. I'm going to try to focus more on side veggies and less focus on the main dish.

I guess, this probably doesn't help you much. But, it's something I've been wanting to work on. Good luck with DJ. I don't think there's much I can do to motivate Brent to eat healthier.

I like to buy fresh fruit and veggies and keep them handy in the fridge, either in tupperware or baggies (for carrots, snap peas, etc). You can also do potatoes with melted cheese and cooked broccoli over the top. Do a salad and fresh fruit for a side and you're set. I try not to buy a lot of unhealthy things to begin with, so when I am in the mood for a snack (or my family is) we can't just much on chips or anything, we choose from healthier things instead.

This is probably similar to the others, but I would try using ground turkey or ground chicken in your fave recipes. Also, if he has a sweet tooth, melt some semi-sweet chocolate chips (just a little bit) and drizzle over healthy fruit. And like the others said, just don't buy anything he's not supposed to eat. Try to get him to drink all his water everyday, with incentives if it helps (dessert or something he's been craving, in small amounts of course). Good luck!
